14 November — Walking Through The World Harmlessly versus The World Owes Me A Living

‘Walking through the world harmlessly’ means leaving no trace behind of your having been in a particular place. However, there are certain cafes which sell their products at a cheaper price in the understanding that they need to employ less staff if their customers clear up after themselves. All the customer is expected to do is to take his or her tray to the nearest bin, empty the packaging and leftover food into the appropriate places hence leaving their table clear for the next person and all the staff need to do is to wipe the table. However, in my experience of frequenting these cafes some customers do follow the rules whilst others simple do not often leaving their table in a great mess.

What is the difference in attitude or the way in which one views the world between those who ‘do’ and those who ‘don’t’.?

Does it all boil down to self esteem?.

Could one perhaps say that the people who clear up after themselves have high self esteem whilst those who do not are low in self esteem? Do the different attitudes stem from self worth? Are those people who see it as the staffs’ job to clear up after them — despite the expectation that the customer should clear up after him or herself — lacking in self worth and in some perverse way ‘doing it their way’ makes them feel good about themselves and important? It certainly is a way of stamping their feet and saying ‘no ‘—’ shan’t’ — ‘ won’t’ —and sticking two fingers up to society. A society from which they often feel excluded in some way. These perhaps are the same people who draw graffiti on newly painted walls etc.

Is it that when we don’t feel good about ourselves and don’t feel accepted by society in general, that we develop a very strong need or urge to make our mark upon it in some way by communicating to the rest of the world that it ‘owes us a living’ in the sense that we exist too?

PONDER POINTS — I feel good abut myself when…I need feedback from others to feel that I’m a worthwhile person when…Incidents which have made me feel worthless are….I feel self worth when…I do not need others to reinforce my belief that I am a worthwhile person because
