23 November 2021 — HELPING OURSELVES THROUGH HELPING OTHERS

‘When you offer milk to a hungry child or a blanket to a shivering brother on the pavement, you are but placing a gift of God into the hands of another gift of God! God serves but he allows you to claim that you have served” Sri Sathya Sai Baba).

When we help someone else it makes us feel good and sometimes it is hard not to feel pride in what we have done. AND, hard also perhaps NOT to feel that we are better than them in some way because we are NOT in their position.

The above saying pulls us up sharply. ‘God serves but he allows you to claim that you have served’….’you are but placing a gift of God into the hands of another gift of God’.

Many of us do not believe in God but I believe we all have to admit that there is a power in the Universe which is outside of our ego self and over which we do not have conscious control.

It is not unlikely that our ego minds judge and criticise the ‘shivering brother on the pavement’ and look down on him or her. Another saying tells us that ‘there but for the Grace of God go I’.

It would be good perhaps for us to remember the above saying: ‘When you offer milk to a hungry child or a shivering brother on the pavement, you are but placing a gift of God into another gift of God’ .

What this saying is also telling us is that no-one is special.

PONDER POINTS: how I felt on reading the above is …. what I think about the idea that no-one is special is …. what I think about the idea that we are all ‘gifts of God’ is …… How I feel about giving to people begging on the pavement is ….
