3 December 2021 — EDUCATION -’THE NEED FOR IMAGINATION. A SENSE OF TRUTH AND A FEELING OF RESPONSIBILITY, THESE ARE THE VERY NERVE OF EDUCATION’ (Rudolf Steiner)
Personally, I owe Rudolf Steiner so much as my sons weren’t doing well at the state school and were put into remedial classes when I felt very strongly that they should not be there.
I had never heard of Rudolf Steiner or the Steiner schools then but was advised by someone to look into them with a view to registering my sons there. In those days fortunately one did not have to pay and there was a Steiner School in walking distance. How fortuitous!! Both my sons turned out to be dyslexic and that was the reason for their poor performance in the state school. In those days dyslexia was not understood or recognised as a genuine learning disability.
Later when I qualified as a teacher and undertook teaching practice at a state school I knew that becoming a teacher in the state system was not for me because I felt very much that children weren’t allowed to develop as themselves but were guided to believe what they were told and to regurgitate facts rather than think for themselves. I hope after all these years that this has changed.
Where, indeed, would we be if people had not been allowed to explore their ideas! There are many stories of inventors who had to fight to get their ideas accepted and those ideas are now an essential part of our society (Edison Henry Ford etc). But there are also many of us who did not have the courage to fight for our beliefs and took the safe path of going along with what society expected us to think, do and believe.
IMAGINATION, TRUTH AND RESPONSIBILITY are the corner stones of a truly developed and ‘together’ individual.
PONDER POINTS: My feelings on reading this are …. how I feel abut my education is….I am able to follow and realise my dreams because. …sometimes I allow myself to be influenced by other peoples negative reactions to my dreams because…..
